Repetition

Repetition

Leading from Cyriaks' work I found the aspect of repetition an idea I could potentially use. Starting with simple cutting and pasting.

I found I could create a nature of chaos or order through different patterns.

Trying out copying and pasting specific/random objects. Which is the original?

What does the image resonate within the viewer? Intrigue?

Cows & Cows & Cows

"Cyriak" is a freelance animator based in the UK, using Adobe PS and AE to create most of his animations. Not much explanation or analysis can go into his most well known work shown on Youtube, besides the outcome disturbing the viewer. Many of his animations start with a mundane subject, then distorting its body to a complementing hypnotic soundtrack - progressing to even stranger and creative mutations via repetition

The audiences' response is all the same. No deep analysis or story is to be unravelled, the animations simply stimulate the viewer.

Essay research presentation

Before the small presentation, I only had an idea as to which artist I wanted to look into, Hannah Hoch, mainly for her obscure creativity in recreation, taking snippings of magazines and changing their meaning. She was a part of the Dadaist society, from which Surrealism was born - of which I am particularly interested in and am currently aiming my Final Project towards.

The presentation pushed me to decide on a particular image to study, of which my peers/tutor pointed me into helpful directions to go to - critics/essayists to study (Dawn Ades, as an example). In the end I have chosen the image Dompteuse, for its ambiguity and paradoxical meanings make for an interesting circle of issues to study.

Sam Taylor-Wood

Sam Taylor-Wood

She creates a "hyper-reality" based world, pushing the boundaries of space and time, through both mediums of photography and video. Most of her works are portraits or self-portraits, creating a scene of narrative, yet are still seemingly incomplete. This creates an atmosphere of tension and suspense, it's this lack of resolution to the narrative that is unlike many series of stills or videos we see.

In terms of presentation, position and attitude of the viewer are of great importance to evoke the right reaction. For example in a series of videos she created, filming staged domestic arguments, she projected these films to fill entire walls within a room. But splitting the frame between the people on camera, she'd have one actor per wall, to signify the separation between the arguing pair. A simple yet effective idea.

Fabricating her own image of reality, she contrasts banal situations against a subliminal world of conflict

Self Portraits, Suspended 2004

  • Such a benign environment, an old factory turned into a studio, perhaps.
  • This, contrasted with this bewildering image of a woman floating in mid-air. A scene of 'magical/mystical' nature
  • Simplistic environment is teamed with a neutral colour palette and plain clothes the woman is wearing, to further emphasise the contrast of the banal against the mystical.
  • She even takes the subject and adds a twist, humour.
